It
is no longer news to music fans that Fuji musician, Wasiu Mogbolahan
Anifowoshe, aka KI, has formed the habit of celebrating his birthday by
throwing parties with plenty of food and expensive cognac, as well as
the usual annual addition to his collection of exotic cars.
But this year, those who had looked
forward to a lavish and champagne-laden soiree when the singer turned 55
on March 3, 2012 went home disappointed.
As usual, K1 opened the door of his
mansion in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, to many guests who had come to
felicitate with him. But he failed to open the tap of his multimillion
naira bar, which in the past flowed with choice wines.
When queried, he told those who gathered
inside his tastefully-furnished living room why he deliberately did not
serve them champagne or cognac.
Sounding like a medical doctor, K1
lectured his guests on the danger of consuming alcoholic beverages and
their tendency to destroy the internal organs of the human body.
For the first time, he confessed that
alcohol was the reason why he had to undergo two surgical operations in
Canada in September 2009. He added that before then, he had always set
aside N2m each year for the purchase of four bottles of rare champagne,
fit for only royalty, to mark his birthday.
Now holding court to a stunned audience,
K1 said that nobody was permitted to share this treat with him. He
said, “I’ve been doing this annually for over 20 years. I quit the habit
in September 2009 immediately after the major operation on my throat
and the examination of my other internal organs. I no longer serve
alcohol in my home or encourage my friends, fans, well-wishers and loved
ones to consume it. Life is sweet, don’t mix it with alcohol and don’t
mess it with hard drugs.”
Of course, there was enough food and
soft drinks to last another 24 hours at the party, but there was not a
drop of alcohol. And most of the guests went home very sober.
