After
controversy and confusion trailed the sudden death of one of the allies
of the former governor of the state, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Apagun
Stephen Oluwole Olumide, he was finally buried Monday evening in Ogun
state, southwest Nigeria.
Olumide who was until his death,
a prominent High Chief in Egbaland, allegedly committed suicide last
Friday night by plunging into an artificial lake in the Golf Resort,
Abeokuta and his body was recovered the following day by local divers.
It
was gathered that the state government had insisted that autopsy test
must be carried out on the corpse before it would be released to the
family members for burial.
This did not go down well with the family members who resisted the government’s decision.
The
family members led by Semi Oluwole Olumide met a stiff resistance from
the police and other security agents, who according to a source had been
drafted to the hospital by 3 a.m.Monday.
According to a
family source,” when we got to the hospital around 8 a.m. to take the
corpse for burial, some policemen denied us an access, showing us a
document that the state government has directed that autopsy must be
done on the corpse before we could take it away.
“We
resisted the government decision, but after several hours of argument,
we met briefly and agreed with the state government to carry out the
autopsy.”
Our correspondent gathered that security
operatives led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of
operations in the state, Joel Eye had presented a letter from the state
government ordering that autopsy be carried out before he could be
buried.
A police officer who was among the policemen
drafted to the hospital told our correspondent on phone that the autopsy
which lasted for about three hours was done on the corpse before it was
released to the family members.
Though the result of the
autopsy has not been made public, feelers from the hospital indicated
that no foul play was observed on the body.
Among the
large crowd comprising mainly political associates of the deceased who
had waited for many hours while the drama was going on in the hospital,
was Otunba Gbenga Daniel.
Olumide was eventually interred in his residence in Surulere, Ita Eko, Abeokuta in the evening.
